By Dr. Hecham Ahmed, Specialist Urologist | American Hospital Clinics Doha | QCHP P4319
Ureteroscopy — removing kidney stones through the natural urinary tract without incisions — has been the gold standard for years. Robotic ureteroscopy gives it a fundamental upgrade in precision, control, and stone-free rates. At American Hospital Clinics Doha, Dr. Hecham Ahmed performs advanced ureteroscopic procedures using the latest scope technology — so you leave stone-free and go home the same day.

What Makes Robotic Ureteroscopy Different?
Traditional flexible ureteroscopy is manually operated — the surgeon’s hand movements transmitted directly to a scope inside a 3mm ureter. Robotic systems translate those movements through software with tremor filtering and enhanced deflection range, reaching areas of the kidney that are difficult or impossible to access manually.
Key Clinical Advantages
✔ Enhanced precision — sub-millimetre scope control throughout the procedure
✔ Greater deflection range — reaches all calices including the lower pole
✔ Tremor filtering — eliminates hand tremor for cleaner stone fragmentation
✔ Reduced radiation exposure — less fluoroscopy needed
✔ Surgeon fatigue eliminated — consistent precision in lengthy procedures
✔ Higher stone-free rates — more complete clearance in a single procedure
✔ Less ureteral trauma — reduced risk of mucosal damage and long-term scarring
Who Is Ureteroscopy For?
- Medium to large stones (above 10mm) in the kidney or ureter
- Stones in anatomically difficult locations (lower pole of the kidney)
- Patients who have failed previous shock wave lithotripsy (ESWL)
- Patients with complex kidney anatomy requiring maximum precision
- Patients who need complete stone clearance in a single procedure

What to Expect: Procedure and Recovery
The Procedure
Performed under general anaesthesia. The scope is passed through the urethra and bladder into the ureter. Stones are fragmented with a holmium laser and fragments removed or left to pass. Typically 45 minutes to 2 hours.
Ureteral Stent
A temporary stent is placed to protect the ureter during healing. Removed as an outpatient 1 to 2 weeks later — no anaesthesia required for removal.
Recovery
Most patients discharged the same day or following morning. Return to desk work: 2 to 3 days. Return to physical activity: 1 to 2 weeks. The stent may cause urinary discomfort while in place — this is normal and temporary.

"The surgeon's hands are no longer the limiting factor. Robotic assistance translates intention into precise scope movement in a 3mm ureter, reaching every corner of the kidney with consistency that manual technique cannot guarantee in difficult anatomy. For patients with complex or recurrent stones, this precision difference matters significantly."
