Your Ear, Nose, and Throat Are Telling You Something. Are You Listening?
A blocked ear that’s been there since your last flight. A sinus headache that appears every time Qatar’s dusty season begins. A sore throat that keeps coming back no matter how many times you treat it at home.
These are not just minor irritations. They are signals.
An ENT specialist (Ear, Nose & Throat doctor) is trained to diagnose exactly what’s driving these symptoms — and treat them at the source, not just the surface. At American Hospital Clinics Doha, our ENT team sees patients every day who waited months longer than they should have.
Here are the 7 signs that mean it’s time to stop waiting.
Sign 1: Hoarseness or Voice Changes Lasting More Than 2 Weeks
A hoarse voice after a cold is normal — and usually resolves within a week. But voice changes that persist beyond 2 weeks without improvement need ENT evaluation.
Persistent hoarseness can indicate:
– Chronic laryngitis
– Vocal cord nodules or polyps
– Acid reflux (GERD) irritating the vocal cords
– More serious lesions requiring investigation
ENT Rule: Any hoarseness lasting more than 2 weeks in a smoker should be evaluated immediately — without waiting. |
Sign 2: Recurrent Ear Pain or Hearing Loss
Occasional ear discomfort during a cold is normal. But recurring ear pain, a sensation of fullness, ringing (tinnitus), or any measurable hearing loss warrants an ENT assessment.
Causes your ENT will evaluate:
– Chronic otitis media (middle ear infection)
– Eustachian tube dysfunction — common in Qatar’s air-conditioned environments
– Earwax impaction
– Fluid behind the eardrum
– Sensorineural hearing loss — gradual, permanent, and often first noticed as difficulty following conversations in noise
Sign 3: Chronic Sinusitis — Blocked, Congested, and Headachy for Weeks
Sinusitis is one of the most common ENT presentations in Qatar — driven by dust, pollen, and rapid temperature changes between outdoor heat and indoor air conditioning. Acute sinusitis resolves within 10 days. Anything beyond 12 weeks is classified as chronic sinusitis and requires specialist management.
Symptoms of chronic sinusitis:
– Persistent nasal congestion on one or both sides
– Thick coloured nasal discharge
– Facial pain or pressure — particularly around the forehead and cheeks
– Reduced or lost sense of smell
– Post-nasal drip and chronic throat clearing
Sign 4: Snoring and Sleep Disturbance
Snoring is not just a noise problem — it can be a sign of obstructive sleep apnoea (OSA), a condition where breathing repeatedly stops and starts during sleep. OSA is associated with serious cardiovascular risk and excessive daytime fatigue.
See an ENT if:
– You snore loudly most nights
– You or your partner notice you stop breathing during sleep
– You wake unrefreshed despite a full night’s sleep
– You experience morning headaches or excessive daytime drowsiness
Sign 5: Tonsil or Throat Problems That Keep Recurring
One bout of tonsillitis is manageable. Recurring tonsillitis — more than 3 to 4 times per year — is a different matter. An ENT specialist will assess whether tonsillectomy is the right solution, and guide you through the decision with clear criteria.
Also see an ENT for:
– A persistent sensation of something stuck in your throat (globus)
– Difficulty swallowing that isn’t explained by a cold or infection
– Visible tonsil stones causing bad breath and discomfort
Sign 6: Nosebleeds That Are Frequent or Heavy
Occasional nosebleeds — especially in Qatar’s dry, air-conditioned climate — are common and usually harmless. But frequent nosebleeds (more than once a week), very heavy bleeding, or bleeding that is difficult to stop need ENT evaluation to rule out structural or vascular causes.
Sign 7: A Lump in the Neck That Hasn’t Gone Away
A neck lump that appears with a cold and resolves within 2 weeks is likely a reactive lymph node. A lump that persists beyond 3 weeks without explanation needs urgent ENT evaluation.
Important: A persistent neck lump is one of the most important ENT red flags. Most turn out to be benign — but some require urgent investigation. Never wait more than 3 weeks to have this assessed.

"The ENT conditions I see most often in Qatar — chronic sinusitis, ear infections, and voice problems — are all highly treatable when caught early. The mistake patients make is assuming symptoms will resolve on their own. Most do not. Early evaluation means faster recovery and less long-term impact on quality of life."
